He later changed his name to Sieur de Lamothe Cadillac, mapped the Great Lakes, and founded Fort Pontchartrain, now the city of Detroit. Upon his return to France, he served as governor of Castelsarrasin. His legacy is such that General Motors chose his name for its luxury automobiles, the Cadillacs.
