The only surviving example of this piece of our aviation heritage will be presented to you—both on the ground and in flight—by two enthusiasts dedicated to sharing this rich and fascinating history.
A reconnaissance aircraft and bomber during World War I, the Breguet XIV is also famous for its role in the epic history of the first airline dedicated to the postal service. It was flown by illustrious aviators—now regarded as the pioneers of airmail—including Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Didier Daurat, Jean Mermoz, Henri Guillaumet, and many others.
A technological gem ahead of its time, more than 8,000 units were manufactured during and after World War I, and it was subsequently exported to 23 countries. Today, only two original examples of the Breguet XIV remain, preserved in two museums.
To ensure that the memory of this first biplane—designed in 1917 in France by the Breguet company—is not lost, a replica was built between 1992 and 2003 by aviation enthusiasts. It is housed at the Gandalou airfield and, to everyone’s delight, it flies!
