According to legend, Moissac Abbey was founded by King Clovis in 508. However, it was during the Middle Ages that its influence and development really took off.
The abbey as we know it today had been part of a Benedictine monastery since the 8th century.
In the 11th century, Durand de Bredon, right-hand man to the abbot of Cluny and bishop of Toulouse, contributed to the influence of Saint-Pierre Abbey. The abbey enjoyed a veritable golden age, becoming one of the most important Christian communities in the West. Abbot Durand de Bredon had the abbey church of Saint Pierre rebuilt. Today, the church still has its Romanesque base in white stone, while the upper part, rebuilt in the Gothic period, is in brick.
Moissac Abbey was made famous by Jean-Jacques Annaud's film "The Name of the Rose".
Thanks to its strategic position at the crossroads of various river and land routes: between Toulouse, Bordeaux and the Albigeois region, between Quercy and Gascony, Moissac Abbey became an essential spiritual centre on the Pilgrim's Way to Santiago de Compostela.
Today, the abbey church, the cloister, the upper room of the bell tower and the hôtellerie Sainte Foy, formerly the abbots' residence and now a venue for temporary exhibitions, can all be discovered.
