In the Tarn et Garonne, 4 destinations have been awarded this prestigious label: Montauban, Moissac - Lauzerte - Auvillar, Bastides et Gorges de l'Aveyron & Cordes-sur-Ciel and medieval towns.
Linked by the Pilgrim's Way to Santiago de Compostela, Moissac, Auvillar and Lauzerte illustrate the diversity of the landscapes of the south-west, from the sun-drenched hillsides of Quercy to the vast fruit-growing plains surrounding the Tarn and Garonne rivers.
These authentic destinations also boast a wide variety of magnificent architectural styles: from themedieval art of theAbbey of Saint Pierre to theart deco of Moissac, from the hilltop villages of Auvillar, all in Toulouse brick, to Lauzerte, in the white stone of Quercy.
Situated just a few kilometres from each other, these three treasures of the Tarn-et-Garonne promise some surprising discoveries.
In the heart of the Tarn-et-Garonne region, Moissac boasts some remarkable architectural treasures, including the Cacor canal bridge andSaint-Pierre abbey, famous for its cloister, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.
Crossed by the Canal des Deux-Mers and the Tarn, Moissac offers a peaceful setting in which to discover its enchanting landscapes.
Like Lauzerte and Auvillar, two of France's most beautiful villages, Moissac is a must-see.
The cloister of Saint-Pierre Abbey in Moissac and the Ingres Bourdelle Museum in Montauban are the 2 most visited sites in the Tarn et Garonne.
Until 2027, visit one of the two sites, keep your ticket and you will be able to visit the second site at a reduced rate.
It's a great way to discover our heritage at a low price! "
Let yourself be charmed by Lauzerte, a village perched high above the plain, with its white stone houses and cobbled streets inviting you to stroll. Listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France, Lauzerte shares this prestigious title with its neighbour Auvillar.
Lauzerte will amaze you with the beauty of its limestone plateaux and valleys lined with Chasselas vines, while Auvillar, overlooking the Garonne valley, offers a magnificent viewpoint and will surprise you with its circular grain market and its Saint-Pierre church, one of the largest in the department.
You may have noticed the cobblestones at the corner of Place des Cornières are raised!
It's a reference to a corner of a page that calls up the imagination and dreams for a few moments... Jacques Buchholtz created this work in 1988.
In Auvillar, you'll love thewarm, friendly atmosphere that emanates from the sun-drenched pink bricks. In the heart of the village, past the majestic Tour de l'Horloge, all brick and stone, you arrive at the triangular central square, home to a perfectly preserved 19th-century market hall.
Throughout the village, statues of pilgrims adorn the façades of buildings, silent witnesses to a rich and fascinating history. We'll tell you all about it!
In the 18th and 19th centuries, Auvillar shone thanks to its earthenware factories and potters. Today, this tradition lives on at the great potters' market, held on the last weekend in October. To mark the occasion, a pilgrim sculpture competition is organised. The winning entry joins the other sculptures on the village facades, adding to Auvillar's heritage.
